Brief

There are so many modifications that can be done to a sportbike, but what should you do first? Well, I am not here to tell you that, but one modification I believe to be on the top of the list is the front turn signals. It's my opinion signals are the first to go because stock signal are about the most awful looking accessory to leave on your bike. Looks like a bug antennae sticking out of your bike. Anyway, lets get on with what I came here to do, tell you about a great turn signal modification.

Overview

Originally, when I first decided to change the signals I went with a mutli-colored lens which protruded out about 2” from the fairing. Well after my little low side in Feb of ‘02 I had a set of Lockhart Phillips flush mounts installed however, there was a design flaw. You can't see the signals from the front. So if you are going to make a turn the person who is waiting for you can't see the signal. So after you make the turn and you get that dirty look, now you'll know why.

So how can you remedy this situation with out putting on a set of bug feelers and still maintain a stylish look? Simple, install a set of Watsen Design LED turn signals. The unit's housing is CNC machined aluminum with a total of 10 LED's installed, 8 facing forward and 2 at the end. The back is filled with a resin to make the unit completely water proof. At this time Watsen Design offers three styles, flat black, gloss black and silver.

My signal came gloss black with a small aluminum spacer for the Honda 929. However, I had to add a few more washers to bring the signal out from inside the fairing. The unit was installed in less than 15 and most of that was removing the air duct covers. Watsen Design also includes two resistors which can be installed in parallel to slow the blinking rate.



I ran into one small problem when I installed my signals. When either signal was activated both indicators on the dash would blink. Also, when the brake was applied the signals would stop blinking. At first I had thought I had a ground problem, but then I realized my rear taillights are also LED's. With the whole system being LED there was not enough current being drawn through the relay. This made the system think there was a bulb out, thus, giving the double indicator on the dash. This was remedied by installing the resistors, giving the system the current draw it needs.
